REVOLUTIONARY WAR-DATED MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT SIGNED BY VICE PRESIDENTS OF PENNSYLVANIA TO THE STATE’S TREASURER DAVID RITTENHOUSE REQUESTING PAYMENT FOR REPAIRS AT INDEPENDENCE HALL Reads in full: “£200, In Council, Philadelphia March 17th, 1779, Sir, Pay to Mr. Robert Allison on his order the Sum of two hundred pounds for paying the workmen employed in the Court room in the State House, for which he is to account. To David Rittenhouse Esqr., Treasurer, Geo. Bryan, Vice-president, Received the Contents Robert Allison.” “IN COUNCIL, PHILADELPHIA MARCH 17TH, 1779, SIR, PAY TO MR. ROBERT ALLISON ON HIS ORDER THE SUM OF TWO HUNDRED POUNDS FOR PAYING THE WORKMEN EMPLOYED IN THE COURT ROOM IN THE STATE HOUSE” Independence Hall was known as the State House from its completion in 1753 until the last half of the 19th century. The Court Room connects to the Assembly Room, the very place the Declaration of Independence was drafted, adopted, and signed, through the Vestibule. We were unable to locate another Independence Hall work order available for sale at auction making the present document virtually nonexistent and excessively desirable.
