Description: Antique Japanese Edo Era (Dated 1776) Black Lacquer Bowl (1) Gold Makie Turtles & Cranes 5.25" This is for a single bowl w/ lid. This is an antique Japanese Edo Era (dated 1776) gold Makie lacquer lidded bowl. It was hand turned from cryptomeria wood with over twenty layers of red lacquer. On top of the black lacquer there is a makie (raised gold lacquer) done in the auspicious Crane & Turtle motif. Japanese lacquer is considered the finest in the world. This type of bowl was often used for soup or rice. Having been in storage for most of the past 200 years, and looking like it was used very sparingly, this lidded bowl remains in good polish and in very good condition. It measures 5.25" in diameter by 3" tall w/ lid. Originally a set of 10. Box included with purchase of all remaining bowls.
