Description: These are one of our favorite trees. They are beautiful in the spring when they bud. They are probably one of the most colorful trees you see when driving up and down the dismal interstates in the spring bursting with color. One really cool fact is that they are in the pea family. You can eat the flowers if you would like. they also have seeds in the summer, you can eat those too. Taste a little like a pea. Mostly we just enjoy the beautiful flowers in the spring. The flowers are shaped like a humming bird. The stem would be the beak and you should be able to use your imagination from there. The leaves are heart shaped. Starting Redbud Trees from Seed To successfully germinate redbud seeds, follow these steps: Scarification: Break dormancy by scarifying the seed coat. You can use mechanical means such as a metal file or coarse sandpaper to gently wear away the seed coat. We often get really hot water and put the seeds in the water for 24 hours (we have had the best results with this method). Moist Sand and Peat: Place the scarified seeds on the surface of a container filled with moist sand and peat. Cover with additional moist sand and peat. Refrigeration: Store the container in the refrigerator for 5 to 8 weeks at a temperature of 35 to 41°F (2 to 5°C). This cold stratification period helps to break dormancy. Generally the best time to plant is in the fall, so they can be outside and have a natural refrigeration (winter). Warmth: After the chilling period, move the container to a warm location with temperatures around 65 to 75°F (18 to 24°C). This will trigger germination. Germination: Seeds will begin to germinate when warm spring weather arrives. Once seedlings have produced their first set of heart-shaped leaves, transplant them into a permanent location with well-draining soil. Remember to handle the seeds gently and keep the soilconsistently moist during the germination process. With proper care, yourredbud tree seeds should successfully germinate and grow into healthy youngtrees.
